1619 Project

What is the 1619 project? It is a series of podcasts hosted by Nikole Hannah- Jones of the New York Times. Her thesis is that black people are the originators or perfectors of democracy in America. She traces this back to the descendants of 20 -30 black Africans sold into slavery to Colonists when they arrived on a ship, White Lion, at Old Point Comfort, Virginia in 1619. This date she argues is a beginning that has as much significance as 1776 when the ideals of democracy were first drafted into the declaration of independence from Britain written by Thomas Jefferson and adopted by the 13 American Colonies at the second Continental Congress in Philadelphia.
