The Naija Ninja

The sad passing of Sound Sultan (Fasasi Olanrewaju) on Sunday, July 11, 2021, after succumbing to Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL), a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma made me realize that there are alot of silent and personal battles being fought by many people. Case in point, Chadwick Boseman – fondly remembered as T’Challa, the Black Panther.

Whatever struggle or process you are going through let me say, “Hang in there. I can relate!” The battle is not just physical it is psychological too. You have got to stay positive even when self doubt and anxiety try to weigh you down. Eyes on the price!

I remember watching Sound Sultan play the role of “Prof. Alloy” in Basket Mouth’s You Tube Comedy Series – Papa Benji during the COVID – 19 lockdown. All that time he was silently battling cancer. But we didn’t know. Just like Chadwick.

The multi-talented/award-winning actor, comedian, singer, and producer was a Hip-pop/Afrobeats pioneer in Nigeria. He often referred to himself as a “Naija Ninja”, which was a reference to his resilience and how hard he had to fight for a place at the table. Hosting shows and participating in talent shows to raise money to pay for studio sessions. His diligence and resilience was typical of most Nigerians fighting for a better life in an environment where the odds are stacked against you. Sound Sultan’s hardwork and persistence resulted in such monster hits as, Mathematics (Jagbanjantis), Motherland, Orobo and Ole, which will forever remain etched in our consciousness. Largely because of the songs’ dance appeal and socially conscious messages.

I particularly love Motherland which showcased his talent as a lyricist, a composer and producer. The song is a patriotic take on the mass migration syndrome plaguing Africa. He paints a vivid picture of frustration, sacrifice and struggles on the part of the migrants and those they have left behind. Motherland is witty, fresh and timeless. It Never loses its flavor whenever I listen to it. Vintage. Quintessential Sound Sultan.

His career spanned over two decades and he remained relevant for much of that time. His last album, “8th Wonder”, was released in May 2020.

Sound Sultan was also a family man. He is survived by a wife and 3 kids. He was loved within the industry for his generosity with his time, humility, discipline and exemplary work ethics. A trait he attributed to his selfless and devoted parents.

Rest in Power my brother. You shall be missed. Thank you for the memories.
