Word of the Day – Invidious

Today’s word is “Invidious”.

Adjective. c.1600. From Latin Invidiosus meaning – full of envy, envious (giving rise to hatred or hateful).

Invidia – envy, grudge, jealousy, ill will.

It has also come to mean that which is discriminatory, prejudice, obnoxious, unpleasant, eliciting resentment and anger in others.

I chose today’s word because there seems to be so much invidia in the world 🌎. The world has gotten smaller in the last 2 hundred years thanks to revolutionary advancements in transportation, science and medicine. But as the planet became a global village and more interconnected humanity seems to have grown wider apart and more divided.

Freedom (free speech and thought) has come to mean toxic false narratives and the proliferation of organizations that practice invidious discrimination on the basis of race, sex, gender, religion, national origin, ethnicity or sexual orientation.

If we are to survive as a species we need more love 💘 and tolerance (and less invidia) as we learn to make do with scarcer resources and less elbow room in the light of a burgeoning population.

My two cents. #ideas4Monday #TheMostExpensiveRealEstate&OtherWorks
