He Jiankui’s story raises questions of bioethics, sanctions and punishment in the face of good intentions, naivety and ambition.

Prior to being incarcerated He had collaborators and colleagues in academia, across the globe, who were aware of his research. He dreamed of commercializing his process and even a Nobel prize.

Alas, that wasn’t to be. His announcement of the, HIV resistant, CRISPR babies was met with wide criticism. And the backlash was losing his job, being torn away from family in Shenzhen and imprisoned for three years.

It is still early days for Genome editing technology. The pros and cons are still being debated. Likewise the regulation and bioethics.

Blood transfusions and organ transplants suffered a similar fate in the early twentieth century before becoming widely accepted as part of the protocol for certain surgeries and life saving treatments.

Governments and scientists have a duty to act in the best interest of the public. Any new technology must be deployed under structured and safe conditions.

The only constant in life is change. Keep on walking. One World 🌎 . One Love ❤️.
