AI and Traffic Management

Seattle is the first City, in the US, to benefit from Google’s project “Green Light.” The program uses AI to help decogest traffic in different parts of the City by sifting through massive data to identify patterns and make suggestions to engineers to optimize traffic lights. The AI reduces crunch time by replicating the capability of dozens of analysts. It is important to note that the process is vetted and supervised by humans. Decisions are taken by the engineers to make adjuctments to “stop and go” time (sometimes by a few seconds), thus impacting idling time and ultimately carbon footprint of road users.

The Seattle program is free, and Google is also conducting tests at 70 intersections in 13 other cities around the world. If successful, this could have implications for traffic management systems globally going forward. Visit the link to read more about this initiative:
